Kuwentong ESL #9: Types of ESL Students

Disclaimer: I'm not endorsing any ESL Schools. I made this blog to share unforgettable things that only ESL teachers can relate.😝 I do not intend to harm anybody. ✌

***

ESL world is such a vast place but the four corners of a classroom makes it small. As they say, every person is unique, which makes life more intriguing.

In this blog, I'll be sharing the different types of students I encountered in ESL world that made my ESL journey very colorful.

Ikimasho!!πŸ‘Š

1. OMG

They are either Smarty-pants or feeling Smarty-pants. They will shower you with questions in each and every class, so you have to prepare all the time. Even a simple comma in a sentence is a big deal for them. They always join 'The Public Speaking Contest' to show what they have got.

2. Ocean Deep

(Opposite of OMG) They are difficult to understand as their level is below the sea. You always need to breathe before going to your class to prepare yourself for a laborious 50-minute class with their electronic dictionary as your means of communication. Prepare your 'Chop English' as well since they do not understand a whole sentence.

3. Marites

They are always updated about  the latest news and rumors sorrounding the campus. Whenever they meet you, they always have something to tell. They also join the Public Speaking Contest to share interesting stories they had at school.

4. Sleepy

This is typical to Koreans, but very rare to the Japanese. They give you a lucky time because your timetable is the same as their nap time schedule. "Did you enjoy your free time?" is the usual question they ask when you meet them.

4. Free-talkers

This is typical to Koreans again. As soon as they step into your classroom, they will immediately start their stories even before being asked. They do the same whenever you see them outside.πŸ˜‚ They do not like using the book in the class, so you talk about anything during the 50-minute class. They often win in the Public Speaking Contest.πŸ˜†

5.Drunkers

After their class, they will go out to drink right away with their group. They attend your class suffering from hangover or stomachache, and after 10 minutes, they will excuse themselves to go to the toilet. πŸ˜‚  Expect to see them in popular diners around the area busy drinking.

6. Tamaditis

These are the students who just go abroad and enroll to the academy for a vacation. They are often absent, and spend their day in their room sleeping and go out for a drink at night. They go to Study Area not to study but to sleep because of the free A/C there. You would just be shocked that they are leaving soon but they haven't even attended your class.

7. Kuting

They are Teacher's pet. The ones you can call your 'bestie.' Every afternoon, you always see them peeking through the Faculty room windows while checking if their 'Teacher Bestie' is there to invite them hang out with them. Ask how their last weekend was, they will immediately answer they went somewhere with their bestie teacher.πŸ˜‚

8. Manager's Pet

If Teacher's pet are always with their teachers, these students often hang out with their managers. They are also updated about the latest news and rumors around the campus. Manager's office is their another home. Some of them end up being the next student manager.

9. Generous

They always give something to their teachers. It's either snacks or souvenirs they buy during their travel, or before they leave school, they will get you a Starbucks tumbler. 😁 Moreover, they often ask you to have dinner at popular restaurants around town with them and they will pay for everything.

10. Kuripot

If there are generous, this type of students are tooooooo thrifty. They do not go out and they study from Monday to Sunday. Study Area is their favorite place to stay because of the free A/C. They just meet their rooms at night because they are saving electric bill. Also, some of them do not take a shower a lot because they are saving water bill.πŸ˜‚

11. Foodies

They love eating. If they are still new, they will always ask you to recommend a good restaurant. Before leaving school, they have already been to all restaurants around the city. Some of them are also 'The Generous' type.

12. Artists of the Year

These are students who showcase their talents and skills in School activities like the 'End of the term'. They sing, dance or play musical instruments like the guitar or the piano. Most of them join forces with their teachers who belong to the same category.

13. Travelers

Their main goal in staying at the academy is to travel, and not to study.  Their names are always on the list of  students who are on a trip posted on the bulletin board. They are more familiar with the beautiful beaches and tourist spots in the Philippines more than you are.

14. Tanders

This is the term we used for our old students. Often times, they just study English because they do not have anything to do during their holidays or  they want to skip winter in their countries. Some of them are free-talkers but some of them take studying English seriously.

15. Mood swing

This type of students are difficult to spell. Sometimes, they are active, and sometimes it seems that you're just talking to the wall. You have to adjust everyday.

16. Backstabbers

(A type of student I really hate😑). They always smile at you and compliment your teaching style, but you will just be shocked that your AHT called you to say that they have already complained you to their manager. Hmmmmf.πŸ™

17. Oppas and Unnis

They are the popular ones at school as their presences give you a wonderful day. They are rays of sunshine. (believe me.😍) Some of them are models or actors in their countries. During your class, there are people who pass by at the corridor and simply gaze at the glass door of your room.. many times.

18. Jowa Finders

Their main goal in staying at the Academy is to find a "jowa" (boyfriend/girlfriend). This is typical to Junior or University students. If you want to find them, just walk around the academy at night. Moreover, they will never get tired talking about "love" in the class.

19. Unhygienic students

(Though quite offensive, this list won't be completed without it). This type of students release uninviting smell that can overpower one whole area. The often problem is either they have poor hygiene or skin diseases. If you smell something bad, it means that they are coming.😁

Life would be too ordinary if everyone were the same. Like in ESL world, diverse students are everywhere which made my work experience more special.

I think that's all for this list. If you have more to add, you can post it on the comment section.

Kuwentong ESL #4: "T.G..I.F.!"

Hanaking for the japanese. Bulgem for koreans.  Literally means "Fire Friday". I will never forget how happy my students' face were whenever I said those phrases. T.G.I.F. as we, ESL Teachers, say to our students or even to each other every Friday. However, some crazy party goers change TGIF to D.B.I.F. which stands for Drink Beer, It's Friday. I personally love Fridays because Mondays to Thursdays are quite exhausting. In our school before, Mondays to Thursdays were my busy days because I needed to teach from 8am to 5pm. If I had special classes, it would take me until 8pm to finish. However, every Friday, it seemed like the atmosphere was not too heavy. Even if I had to teach for eight hours, it was not that exhausting at all.. Maybe because I was looking forward to Friday nights or weekends, as much as I look forward to Pay Day. Koreans and Japanese university students love having a party every Friday night. If you have seen in kdramas or in jdramas how their part...

Kuwentong ESL #3: "Jalmukesumneda!"

"People who love to eat are always the best people."  I do not know if it is just a mere coincidence, but most restaurants that I have been to where I read this quote on the wall often serve good food.   Aside from the diverse culture and traditions that I have learnt from teaching ESL learners, their love for food will always be notable for me. Korean food is loved by many filipinos as much as we love korean dramas. In this blog, I would like to share my journey in discovering korean food. While many people meet korean food through watching kdramas, I met them as I teach korean students. First was Kimchi. I had only seen it in kdramas and judging by its look, I did not like it at first.  One day, we went to a Diner just near the school we used to teach to have dinner. My friend who was also my co-teacher could not contain happiness when he saw this red colour radish with strange smell for me and smiled like a child after having a bite, but I, who found the taste str...

Kuwentong ESL #5: My Korean Mom

I am writing this blog again to tell myself not to forget one special woman who influenced my thoughts and decisions. Her English name is Suzan.  Perhaps she was already in early fifty's when I met her.  Note: Age is a very sensitive topic in ESL world, so we do not normally ask students age specially when they are quite old). Suzan is a Korean but she migrated in Japan when she was a University student and stayed there for many years. She even had her own restaurant and building in Japan. However, she decided to go back home after staying there for a long time.  (As far as I remember, she also lived in other European country, though I don't remember its name). After that, she decided to go to the Philippines to learn how to play Golf. Yes. You would not believe it, right? TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY GOLF.  And since our school also offers that course where students have a 4 hour- Golf class and a 4 hour-  English class, she chose our institution.  My first impres...
